Over the last year or so there has been discussion on what can/should be done to promote attendance at SEWFARS meetings.  The business portion of the meeting averages 20 minutes and considering a typical target gathering time of 60 to 90 minutes we do have plenty of time available for other activities.

Several great ideas were shared and these will probably be implemented over the months to come.  However, we all agreed that the first one we should implement (and has seemed to be successful) is hosting presentations on topics of interest.  The opportunity to get this going presented itself after the publication of the last newsletter.  We now have three (3) sessions that we will be hosting over the months to come; the first one being at the January 2010 meeting.

The topic being presented at the January meeting is “IBOC (In-Band, On-Channel) AM/FM Broadcasting”.  We'll discuss how it works, what equipment is used and go into a little detail about the makeup of the RF systems.  Also planned with the slideshow and photos is a demonstration on the equipment used.

The presenter is SEWFARS member Chris (“Doc”) Tarr CBNT, CBRE, DRB.  Chris is the Director of Engineering for Entercom’s radio stations in Milwaukee and Madison, WI (a position he has held since 2003) and works as a contract Engineer for several stations in Wisconsin.  He served one term on the SBE National Board of Directors in 2006, was the Chair of the IT Strategies Committee, and in 2008 was given the SBE Chapter 28 Wulliman Award in recognition of extraordinary service to the SBE and the Broadcast Engineers of Southeast Wisconsin.  Chris was also one of the first (1 of 8) Engineers in the country to earn the SBE's DRB (Digital Radio Broadcasting) certification.

For those who do not know Chris, he is an outgoing guy with a great sense of humor and he does a great job of taking subjects having a technical flavor and discussing them in a manner that the entire audience can understand.  This should be a great experience!

The presentation date is January 28, 2010 (the Fourth Thursday in January) and the place is the normal meeting place; the Equitable Bank in Waukesha.  To give as much time to Chris, the plan is to start the business portion of the meeting at 7pm so we can let Chris start at 7:30pm.
